Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?

No. You do not need a referral to book an appointment with a psychologist as a private client. However, if you wish to claim Medicare rebates, you will generally need a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral from your General Practitioner (GP), or an appropriate referral from another eligible medical specialist.

Can I claim Medicare rebates?

Clients with a current Mental Health Treatment Plan from their General Practitioner may be eligible for Medicare rebates for psychological services.
If you are unsure about your eligibility or referral requirements, our office will be happy to discuss these with you.

What is a Mental Health Treatment Plan?

A Mental Health Treatment Plan is prepared by your GP after assessing your mental health needs. If you are eligible, the plan allows you to access Medicare rebates for a specified number of psychology sessions each calendar year. Your GP can explain the process and whether this option is suitable for you.

What happens at the first appointment?

Your first appointment is an opportunity to discuss your concerns, your personal history, and what has brought you to therapy. Together, you and your psychologist will explore your goals and develop a plan for treatment that is tailored to your individual needs. There is no pressure to share more than you feel comfortable with.

How long are appointments?

Standard appointments are approximately 50 minutes in duration. In some circumstances, longer appointments may be available if clinically appropriate and arranged in advance.

How often will I need to attend?

The frequency of appointments varies depending on your individual needs, goals, and circumstances. Many clients begin with appointments every one to two weeks and adjust the frequency over time in consultation with their psychologist.

What should I bring to my appointment?

f you have been referred under a Mental Health Treatment Plan, please bring your referral (if it has not already been sent to us), along with your Medicare card and any relevant information that may assist your psychologist. You are also welcome to bring a list of any questions or concerns you would like to discuss.

Where is aXon Clinical Psychology & Neuroscience located?

Our clinic is located in the Carbrook / Mount Cotton region in Brisbane’s bayside area. Clients attend from across Brisbane, Logan, the Redlands, the Gold Coast, regional Queensland, and interstate where appropriate services can be provided.

Do you work with children, adult, older adults, and families?

Yes, our clinical work covers all of these, with children accompanied by a parent.

Do clients need to live neat Carbrook or Mount Cotton

We have clients from many areas, such as regional Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

General Clinic Information

Appointments

Appointments are available by prior arrangement. As the clinic is located on private property, attendance is by appointment only.
Please contact us to discuss appointment availability, current fees, and any questions you may have before your first appointment.
Some appointments outside standard business hours may be available by arrangement.

Fees and Payments

Fees vary depending on the type and length of service provided. Please contact the clinic for current fee information.
Payment is required on the day of your appointment. Where eligible, Medicare rebates can generally be processed following payment.

Appointment Changes and Cancellations

If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, we ask that you provide at least 24 hours notice where possible.
We understand that unexpected events and illness can occur. Please contact the clinic as soon as possible if you are unable to attend.
Cancellation fees may apply to late cancellations or missed appointments.

Health and Safety

To help maintain a safe environment for all clients, we ask that appointments be rescheduled if you are experiencing symptoms of a contagious illness.
If you are uncertain whether your appointment should proceed, please contact the clinic and we will be happy to discuss available options.
